Despite the name they really are not made of blood. These are patches of pigment on the Grey horse’s body. Often times this is also called a Bloody Shoulder however these markings are not always found on the horse’s shoulder. Blood Marks are the results of a Somatic Mutation where the Grey gene isn’t turned on in an area. Being a Somatic Mutation, Blood Marks can not be bred for and a horse with a Blood Mark may never produce offspring with one.
