Dilute genes are genes that either mute and/or alter the base colour of a horse, the base colour being the result colour from the Extension and Agouti genes. There are five genetically tested and proven dilute genes (Cream, Dun, Champagne, Pearl and Silver) and three more mysteries that are suspected to be dilute genes (Mushroom, Light Black and the currently unnamed dilute seen on Morgans which can be found under the oddities section). As with the base colours, shades with dilute genes can have a very large range. Some argue that one shade is better then another, I however prefer to appreciate each shade for what they are.
